Get Ready for a Vision2Read Summer of Reading!
Join Vision2Read’s campaign to help improve literacy in San Bernardino County this summer by signing up and participating in the Summer Reading Program at your local library between June 11 and August 4, 2018.
City and County library branches throughout San Bernardino County offer free summer reading programs to children, teens and adults. Kids will be encouraged to read at least five books during summer vacation. Libraries will award achievement and raffle prizes throughout the summer to encourage kids to read. The State Library recommends that students read at least five books during the summer to maintain their level of literacy during the break from school.
The Vision2Read Summer of Reading campaign hopes to increase participation in local library summer reading programs and surpass 50,000 individual participants and 500,000 books read by the end of summer. Contact your local library for more information about how you can help encourage more youths to sign up for library cards to ensure they have access to a free summer reading program. New this year is an online signup system for the Summer Reading Program. Customers can go to www.sbclib.org to sign up then come into any County Library to receive their Summer Reading Program exclusive bag and materials.
Research spanning 100 years shows that students typically score lower on standardized tests at the end of summer vacation than they do on the same tests at the beginning of the summer. 1 More than half of the achievement gap between lower- and higher-income youth can be explained by unequal access to summer learning opportunities.2
The Vision2Read initiative was launched in September 2015 to help achieve the Countywide Vision regional goal to partner with all sectors of the community to support the success of every child from cradle-to-career. Literacy has a profound impact on several elements of the Vision the community has for our county, including jobs and the economy, public safety, education, and wellness.
